Behind the Hedges Campaign
Zeffy's 100% free platform for nonprofits allows us to fundraise at no cost. They are entirely funded by voluntary contributions and an amount will be suggested to you before you complete your payment. You can always change the amount to one of your choice by selecting "Other" in the dropdown menu.
From a cultural heritage perspective St. George’s Church & Churchyard Cemetery at Sibbald Point is well-known to be one of the finest sites of its kind in Canada. Behind its ancient hedges, historians recognize the stone church as the home to Canada’s oldest stained-glass window—the Elizabeth Simcoe designed altar window of 1844. This majestic lakeside site continues to be visited each year by more than ten thousand people seeking solace and knowledge. Many of these are children discovering their first local connection to early Canada.
THE WONDERS HERE have inspired writers including Peter Gzowski, Timothy Findley, and Stuart McLean to spoken fondly of this sacred historic place. More recently the respected historian Su Murdoch concluded, “St. George’s is a very special place that embodies the spirit of Upper Canada and the founding of its early institutions. There is extraordinary meaning to be found in this place."
IN 2024 WE CELEBRATE that this "very special place" is 185-years-old. Since 1839 it has been sustained by volunteers and friends’ donations, depending upon the kindness of people like you.
THE CEMETERY ALONE requires an Annual Budget of $30,000, half of which must come from supporters.
THE CHURCH"S STONE FABRIC AND GLAZED WINDOWS require annual care to keep out the moisture, and new preservation projects arise. This year we are replacing the roof shingles. The shingle manufacturer generously donated his product, upholding the fifty-year guarantee. We have budgeted $45,000 for labour cost, all of which must come from donations.
We invite you to join us in sustaining St. George's Sibbald Point.
